Carolina Safety & Health Consultants, LLC has been a registered Qualified Expert and Health Physics and Radiation Protection Program Service Provider with the State of North Carolina Radiation Protection Section since 1994.

We provide OSHA General Industry Health & Safety, Health Physics & Radiation Safety, Radiation Safety Officer Services, General and Regulatory Consultation Services, Training and Certification, X-ray and radioactive materials facility plans review, program audits and radiation surveys for a wide variety of clients in healthcare, manufacturing and general industry.

We are registered to provide consulting services in North Carolina, New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Tennessee, Ohio, Illinois, California, Utah, Arizona, New Mexico, Kansas, Mississippi, Florida, South Carolina, and Georgia.

 

PRESIDENT / CEO

Lead physicist, Ben Midyette, is an accomplished independent radiation consultant of 27 years. Further, he has worked in the health safety industry for 30 years. After graduating East Carolina University in 1989 with a master’s in physics, he spent 10 years working with the North Carolina State Division of Public Health, worked with the NC Radiation Protection Section as a state regulator, and even had a federally funded position with the Department of Public Health consulting with emergency response personal as a specialist in chemical, biological and radiological agents. Needless to say, his experience in the field proves his dedication to radiation and health safety.

The regulations for nuclear medicine and other radioactive materials are extremely complex and involve State regulatory agencies, the NRC, the Department of Transportation (DOT), and other agencies. Our staff has experience on both sides of the aisle (regulator and non-regulator) and stays current with ever-changing requirements.

CONSULTING TEAM

Lance Miller

Mr. Miller the owner and Principal Consultant of Triad EHS LLC.  Lance has over 20 years of Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) experience across multiple businesses and industries.  He has held both management and hands-on positions developing and implementing EHS programs in single and multiple site environments.  He has worked for the following organizations: The Ford Motor Company, BMW Manufacturing LLC, General Electric (GE), BASF and others.  He helped these organizations consistently reduce their incident rates and improve their safety performance.  Mr. Miller earned his B.S. in Industrial Hygiene from Ohio University.  Lance earned his M.S. in Industrial Hygiene from Purdue University, where he attended as a NIOSH Fellow.  His research at Purdue involved examining airborne particle detection efficiencies of various methods.  He is a Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Laser Safety Officer (LSO), Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) and Qualified Sales Safety Professional (QSSP).  He is a member of the American Society of Safety Professionals (ASSP) and serves as the Standards Expert for the Local Chapter.    He is an OSHA Authorized Outreach Trainer for General Industry 10- and 30-Hour Courses. 

Principal EHS and OSHA Regulatory Consultant

Mr. Cardenas is a graduate of East Carolina University with a master’s in occupational safety & Health. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial Engineering from the University of San Carlos in Guatemala.

Jorge is a Certified Safety Professional (CSP) with extensive experience in Health and Safety includes OSHA and EH&S regulations, standards, and guidelines. His career is complemented by strong interpersonal and leadership skills. A reliable leader, Jorge has developed and implemented various successful initiatives, compliance programs and strategies in the safety and industrial hygiene fields for the Pharmaceutical, Food Manufacturing, Government and Service Industries; and is actively involved providing safety training in English and Spanish for our clients statewide. Jorge has extensive experience in human performance programs and in performing industrial hygiene studies such as noise surveys, air monitoring and chemical sampling. Mr. Cardenas is also experienced in fatality and accident investigations at client work sites.

Mr. Cardenas served as an Industrial Hygienist & Safety Compliance Officer with the North Carolina Department of Labor OSHA from 2005 to 2013, where he performed health & safety inspections in the pharmaceutical industry, chemical industry, food industry, construction, process safety management within the special emphasis programs.

Mr. Cardenas has also worked as a Senior EH&S Associate at Biogen and Eisai Inc in the areas of industrial safety and industrial hygiene. He was responsible for management of EHS Programs at Biogen manufacturing facilities, including environmental compliance, occupational health and safety compliance and improvement initiatives such as process safety, risk assessments and mitigation.

Joe ComelloCSHC Radiation Safety Consultant

Mr. Comello has 29 years of experience in public health, environmental health and safety, and emergency preparedness and response. He earned his Master’s in Environmental Policy & Management (MEPM) from the University of Denver, with a concentration in environment, health, and safety. Coursework included: Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Law, Workplace Safety Management, the Resource Recovery and Conservation Act (RCRA), Emergency Preparedness and Community Right-to-Know Act (EPCRA). In addition, Joe holds the following certifications: Industrial Laser Safety Officer, Laser Institute of America, 2020, and Radiation Safety Officer, Columbia University, 2021.

He was Program Manager of the State Radiological Emergency Volunteer Corps (REVC) (2015-2019) and a member of the North Carolina Radiological Emergency Preparedness (NC-REP) planning workgroup. There he provided radiation monitoring and technical expertise in support of first responders during radiological emergencies.  He worked with radiation safety professionals and emergency managers across the state to plan, recruit, train, and deploy REVC volunteers to provide these services in accordance with federal and state regulations 

Joe was Chair of the Radiation Subcommittee for the Columbus & Metropolitan Medical Response System (CMMRS) (2007-2010).  There he coordinated planning and response to radiological hazards for the city of Columbus, Ohio as the CMMRS Program Manager.

He has also worked as a Registered Sanitarian/Environmental Health Specialist (RS/REHS) with responsibilities in conducting comprehensive audits of schools, childcare facilities, retail food/food processing facilities, and water systems. This work required demonstrated knowledge of multiple regulations, the use of technical equipment to take microbiological and chemical measurements, and the ability discuss findings with responsible individuals in a way that was conducive to improving hygienic practices.

 

Jenna Wootton is a Health Physics Specialist with Carolina Safety and Health Consultants, bringing expertise in radiation safety and workplace protection. With a solid educational foundation and a commitment to fostering safe environments, she is a valued professional in her field.

Jenna earned her undergraduate degree from East Carolina University in May 2022, where she developed a strong interest in health physics and radiation safety. Recognizing the critical role of safety in industries involving radioactive materials, she is currently on track to earning her master’s degree in Medical Physics. This advanced education is expanding her expertise in radiation protection and its medical applications.

In her role at Carolina Safety and Health Consultants, Jenna contributes to the implementation and oversight of radiation safety programs. She works with clients to evaluate radiation hazards, design safety protocols, and ensure compliance with regulatory standards through detailed inspections.

Her skill set includes office support, shielding design, and radiation exposure assessments. Jenna is adept at using analytical tools to identify risks and provide actionable solutions. Known for her precision, problem-solving abilities, and clear communication, she excels in promoting a culture of safety and educating stakeholders on best practices.

Jenna’s dedication to her work reflects her passion for creating safer workplaces and advancing the field of health physics while continuing her academic journey in Medical Physics.

Sophie Spohn is a Health Physics Intern with Carolina Safety and Health. Sophie assists with radiation reports, shielding drawings, plan reviews and data tables, as well as email and file organization.

Currently a second-year undergraduate student at East Carolina University, Sophie is studying biology with the hopes of pursuing graduate school. Sophie has a strong interest in radiation biology and oncology, and plans on earning her PhD to conduct medical research, or become a medical doctor. She is excited to continue learning about the principles of radiation safety in healthcare by shadowing health physics experts at Carolina Safety and Health Consultants!
